Ingredients

Beef & Marinade
  • 1.5 lbs beef ribeye or sirloin thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Asian pear grated (or apple/kiwi substitute)
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger grated
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp green onions thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper freshly ground

Equipment

  • Grill pan or skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Sharp knife

Method

  1. Slice the beef thinly against the grain. Freeze for 30 minutes beforehand for easier slicing.
  2. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, brown sugar, grated pear, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, green onions, and black pepper to make the marinade.
  3. Add beef to the marinade, mix well, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (overnight for best results).
  4. Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the beef in batches to avoid overcrowding, letting it sear for caramelized edges.
  5. Serve hot with steamed rice, lettuce wraps, or alongside Korean side dishes (banchan).

Notes

For a modern twist, try bulgogi in tacos, sliders, or pizza. Substitute tofu or mushrooms for a vegetarian version.
